Guidelines for Diagnosing Malnutrition in Children

The Ministry of Health has just issued Decision 4487/QD-BYT providing guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of acute malnutrition in children from 0 to 72 months old.

A child is diagnosed with acute malnutrition if one of two anthropometric conditions, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) or Weight-for-Height (WHZ), is below the threshold:

- For children with moderate acute malnutrition:- Mid-Upper Arm Circumference: 115mm < MUAC ≤ 125mm (Diagnostic criteria based on MUAC apply only to children aged 6-59 months);- Or Weight-for-Height (Length) -3SD < WHZ ≤ -2SD;- For children with severe acute malnutrition:- Mid-Upper Arm Circumference: MUAC ≤ 115mm;- Or Weight-for-Height (Length) WHZ ≤ -3SD;

Additionally, the Decision also provides guidelines for the treatment of acute malnutrition.
