Electronic Information Sites Must Have Written Agreements When Citing Other News Sources

The Ministry of Information and Communications has just issued Official Dispatch No. 3835/BTTTT-PTTH&TTDT on rectifying the activities of general electronic information websites.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has highlighted a controversial issue within public opinion, which is the situation of "newspaperization" of electronic information sites, and has thus called for urgent measures such as:

- Requiring general electronic information sites to display a link to the original news articles immediately below the news item republished from newspapers.- There must be a written agreement with press agencies (verbal agreements are not accepted) regarding the permission for general electronic information sites to republish news articles. The written agreement citing the news source must be submitted to the licensing authorities before November 15, 2019.- Strictly address violations, especially acts of exploiting general electronic information sites to operate like electronic newspapers, providing sensational and click-bait content, and violating copyrights.

See additional directives in Official Dispatch 3835/BTTTT-PTTH&TTDT issued on October 29, 2019.
