The Prime Minister of Vietnam issued Decision 379/QD-TTg approving the National Strategy for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control to 2030, with a Vision to 2050 (Strategy).

According to the Decision, the strategy set out a number of main tasks and solutions as follows:

- Upgrade infrastructure, proactively adapting to natural disasters and climate change in Vietnam:

  • Research, build, and popularize appropriate housing models; prevent and combat natural disasters in Vietnam;
  • Guide people to build houses, have appropriate policies to support poor households and households with disadvantages in building houses to ensure safety against natural disasters;

  •

    New construction and upgrading of infrastructure must be based on the principle of compliance with planning and proactively responding to natural disasters according to disaster risk zoning without increasing disaster risks.

- Implement measures to ensure safety for people in areas frequently affected by natural disasters in Vietnam:

  • Implement the arrangement and rearrangement of the population in areas frequently affected by natural disasters, especially places with a high risk of flash floods, landslides, riverbank and coastal erosion associated with new rural construction;
  • Places that cannot be relocated need to install monitoring, surveillance, and warning systems to promptly evacuate and reduce risks when natural disasters occur.
