Ministry of Health: 20 underlying diseases put people with COVID-19 at increased risk of severity and high mortality

According to the Ministry of Health, people with underlying diseases such as diabetes; Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; Cancer, especially hematological malignancies, lung cancer; Chronic kidney disease; Obesity, overweight... belong to the group of risk of increasing severity and high death when infected with COVID-19

In an urgent dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and cities on guiding the management and protection of people at risk of COVID-19 on December 21, the Ministry of Health said that at present, the COVID-19 epidemic situation is still ongoing. complicated developments in many countries around the world with newly recorded variants capable of spreading quickly and causing danger such as Delta (B.1.617), Omicron (B.1.1.529).

In which, the group at high risk of infection with high severity of illness and death when contracting COVID-19 is the group of people over 50 years old, people with underlying diseases, people who have not been vaccinated or have not been fully vaccinated.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 20 high-risk underlying diseases when contracting COVID-19, which are:

- Diabetes

- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other lung diseases

Cancer (especially hematologic malignancies, lung cancer and other metastatic cancers).

- Chronic kidney disease

- Organ transplant or hematopoietic stem cell transplant

- Obesity, overweight

Cardiovascular disease (heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathy)

- Cerebrovascular disease

- Down syndrome


- Neuropathy (including dementia)

- Sickle cell disease, thalassemia, other chronic hematological diseases

- Asthma

- Hypertension

- Immune deficiency

- Liver failure

- Substance use disorder

- Are being treated with corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs.

- Systemic diseases.

- Other diseases in children: Primary or secondary pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, congenital inherited metabolic disorder, congenital-acquired endocrine disorder.

In addition, in this official dispatch, the Ministry of Health also guides other risk groups that are people over 50 years old; pregnant.

The Ministry of Health notes that when carrying out isolation, monitoring and treatment at home for people with COVID-19 in high-risk groups, they need to follow professional instructions on how to take care of themselves and monitor their health at home. ; dispensing drugs to treat COVID-19 as prescribed.

At the same time, instruct patients when feeling short of breath (short of breath, shortness of breath increased with exercise, resting breathing rate > 20 breaths/minute or measuring SpO2 < 96%) to contact a doctor immediately for help. counseling, support, assessment of disease status, first aid and appointment of timely transfer of treatment facilities.

Carrying out care and treatment for underlying diseases for people with COVID-19 in high-risk groups at home or at treatment facilities requires consultation and coordination of specialist staff corresponding to the underlying disease of the person with COVID -19.

Isolate people in risk groups for health monitoring and isolation to ensure the lowest risk of COVID-19 infection.

Organize measures for early detection of people with non-communicable diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma...) for timely treatment management.

Manage, monitor health, guide and advise people with non-communicable diseases to ensure diet, physical activity, adherence to treatment, and self-care and monitoring at home.
