South Korea bans single-use utensils in food and beverage outlets from April 1

On January 6, the Korean Ministry of Environment published the revised "regulations on the use of single-use items" in the Official Gazette. Accordingly, food and beverage outlets such as cafes will be banned from using single-use products from April 1. Single-use items are temporarily allowed in stores due to COVID-19.

According to KBS, this regulation will take effect from April 1 after consulting the business world. The Ministry of Environment said this revised draft aims to reduce the volume of disposable items such as plastic cups indiscriminately in the context of increasing waste due to people's consumption habits during the COVID-19 epidemic season. change.

Compared to 2019 when the COVID-19 epidemic had not yet broken out, the amount of paper waste in 2020 increased by 25%, plastic increased by 19%, foam paper increased by 14%, nylon plastic increased by 9%.

In addition, according to the implementation rules of the Basic Law on Reuse of Resources, amended at the end of December last year, the Ministry of Environment has also added appliances and facilities that are subject to the regulations on using furniture. Disposable, effective from 24/11 this year. 

Paper cups, plastic straws and plastic stirrups are newly added to the list of disposable items. Therefore, food service establishments and cafeterias are not allowed to use these items.

The objects banned from using plastic bags will also be extended to retail businesses such as convenience stores, confectionery stores, instead of only being applied to large stores with an area of ​​over 3,000 square meters or more. supermarket is more than 165 m2 as today. In addition, stores with an area of ​​​​over 3,000 m2 are not allowed to use plastic umbrellas, sports matches do not allow spectators to bring plastic cheerleaders inside.
