(1) Interval between 1st and 2nd doses of vaccine

According to the Instruction issued together with Vietnam's Decision 3588/QD-BYT dated July 26, 2021, most of the current COVID-19 vaccines are injected with 2 doses (the interval between two doses is according to the manufacturer's instructions). Specifically,

- AstraZeneca vaccine: 1st dose after 2nd dose: 8-12 weeks

- Gam-COVID-Vac vaccine (also known as SPUTNIK V): 1st dose after 2: 3 weeks

- Pfizer vaccine: 1st dose after 2: 3 weeks

- Vero Cell vaccine (also known as Sinopharm vaccine): 1st dose after 2nd dose: 3-4 weeks

- Moderna vaccine: 1st dose after 2: 4 weeks

(2) What kind of vaccine will be given in the second dose?

For dose 1, people can inject any vaccine that is licensed and distributed locally.

For the second dose, according to the experience of using vaccines of some countries, the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the guidance of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam in Vietnam's Official Dispatch 6030/BYT-DP dated 27/7/2021, it should be noted:

- For those who have received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, it is best to also receive the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine. In the case of limited vaccine resources, the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine can be administered if the vaccinated person agrees.

Do not use vaccines manufactured by Moderna or other vaccines for the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine.

- For people who have been vaccinated with the 1st dose of Sinopharm, Pfizer, or Moderna vaccines, the 2nd dose only needs to be vaccinated with the same type of vaccine as the 1st dose.

For example, if the person who receives the 1st injection is Sinopharm, the 2nd dose can only receive the Sinopharm vaccine.

In addition, for other vaccines that have been licensed, the general rule is that once a vaccine has been given, it is best to give the second dose with that vaccine.

(3) Health monitoring after 2nd dose of vaccine

Similar to the 1st dose of vaccination, the person receiving the 2nd dose of vaccination needs to monitor their health for at least 30 minutes after the injection at the vaccination site before going home.

After that, when going home, the person receiving the second dose of vaccine should self-monitor closely at home within 24 hours and continue to monitor within 28 days after vaccination, especially within the first 7 days for the following signs: general condition, mental status, eating, sleeping, breathing pattern, rash, injection site symptoms, and notify medical staff if there are any abnormal signs.

In particular, people who receive the second dose of the vaccine must go to the hospital or medical facility immediately if they have signs such as: a feeling of numbness around the lips or tongue in the mouth, a feeling of itching, tightness in the throat, choking, difficulty speaking...
