Facebook and Google Officially Required to Establish Servers in Vietnam

This morning (June 12, the National Assembly voted to approve the Law on Cybersecurity with an approval rate of 86.86% of the National Assembly deputies. Major companies like Google and Facebook are officially required to place servers in Vietnam.

Full Text of the Cybersecurity Law 2018

To be specific, prior to voting to pass the entire Cybersecurity Law project, the National Assembly conducted a vote to pass Article 10 and Article 26. Among these, Article 26 was passed with a rate of 81.72%.

According to the provisions of Article 26, service providers in cyberspace such as Facebook and Google are officially obligated to place their servers in Vietnam. The specific provisions are as follows:

3. Domestic and foreign enterprises providing services on telecommunications networks, the internet, and value-added services in cyberspace in Vietnam that collect, exploit, analyze, and process data about personal information, user relationship data, and data created by service users in Vietnam must store this data in Vietnam for a duration stipulated by the Government of Vietnam.

The Cybersecurity Law 2018 officially comes into effect on January 1, 2019.
