Pursuant to the provisions of the Law on Border Protection of Vietnam 2020, border protection is the totality of activities and measures to protect the independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Fatherland and ensure security, order, and social safety in border areas through the combined strength of the entire nation.

What are border protection duties in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 5 of the Law on Border Protection of Vietnam 2020, border protection duties include:

- Formulating and implementing strategies and plans for national border protection.

- Managing and protecting national sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and borders; building, managing, and protecting the system of national landmarks, border markers and signs, border works, border gates, and other works in border areas.

- Protection of national and national interests, peace, security, order, social safety, economy, culture, society, natural resources, and environment; ensuring the enforcement of law in border areas and border gates.

- Socio-economic development in combination with strengthening and consolidating national defense, security, and foreign affairs in border areas.

- Building an all-people border guard, all-people border defense posture in the all-people defense, all-people defense posture associated with people's security, and people's security posture; building border defense areas at provincial and district levels, and civil defense; prevention, combat, response to, and remedy of incidents, natural disasters, catastrophes, climate change, epidemics; search, rescue, and rescue in border areas.

- International cooperation in border guard, border defense diplomacy, people-to-people diplomacy, border building of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development, and long-term stability.

- Ready to fight, fight against war of aggression, armed conflict.

What are the forces performing border protection duties in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 6 of the Law on Border Protection of Vietnam 2020, the force performing border protection duties includes:

- Agencies, organizations, and units of the people's armed forces in border areas and border gates.

- The leading, commanding, and managerial agency of the above-mentioned agencies, organizations, and units of the people's armed forces.

Principles of border protection duties

Pursuant to Article 4 of the Law on Border Protection of Vietnam 2020, the performance of border protection duties must ensure the following principles:

- Complying with the Constitution, laws of Vietnam, and international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a signatory; respecting the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national borders of countries.

- Under the absolute and direct leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam in all aspects, the centralized and unified management of the State.

- Promoting the synergy of the entire people, the political system, relying on the people, and subjecting the People's supervision.

- Combining national defense and security with socio-economics and vice versa; combining the performance of border protection duties with building and consolidating the political system; and developing the economy, culture, society, science, technology, and foreign affairs in the border areas.
