Everyone is aware that both the Identity Card (Chung Minh Nhan Dan) and the Citizen Identification (Can Cuoc Cong Dan) are not lifetime documents. Similar to the regulation that the validity period of the Identity Card (CMND) is 15 years from the date of issuance, the Citizen Identification (CCC) also has a validity period and is renewed when the citizen reaches the required age.

To be specific, Article 21 of the Law on Citizen Identification 2014 stipulates:
Article 21. Age for changing the Citizen Identification card
1. The Citizen Identification card must be changed when the citizen reaches 25 years old, 40 years old, and 60 years old.
Thus, there are three specific ages that citizens need to pay attention to when changing their Citizen Identification card: 25 years old, 40 years old, and 60 years old. Additionally, the Law also stipulates that if the Citizen Identification card is issued, changed, or reissued within 2 years before these prescribed ages, it remains valid until the next age for changing the card.
Citizens should note the line “Valid until:…” on the front of the Citizen Identification card to perform the change or reissue the card accordingly.
Regarding the fee for changing the Citizen Identification card according to age: Completely free of charge.
Apart from the aforementioned age-related cases, citizens are also allowed to change their Citizen Identification card under the following circumstances:
- The card is damaged and cannot be used;- Change in information regarding surname, middle name, first name; physical characteristics;- Re-determination of gender, hometown;- Errors in the information on the Citizen Identification card;- Upon the citizen’s request.
Furthermore, in cases of “losing the Citizen Identification card” or “reacquiring Vietnamese nationality according to the Law on Vietnamese Nationality,” citizens will be reissued the Citizen Identification card.
Note:
- Identity cards issued before the Law on Citizen Identification 2014 took effect remain valid until the expiry date as stipulated; upon request, they can be exchanged for a Citizen Identification card (Clause 2 Article 38 of the Law on Citizen Identification 2014). The validity period of the identity card is 15 years from the date of issue. Upon request or upon expiration, it will be exchanged for a Citizen Identification card.
- From January 01, 2020, all 63 provinces and cities across the country will simultaneously implement the issuance and exchange of the new Citizen Identification cards.
