Guidelines for Organizing Preparation for the 2017 National High School Exam in Vietnam

Content related to high school graduation exams and university admissions in 2017 is a matter of special interest to 12th-grade students as well as parents in Vietnam. In addition to issuing circulars on graduation exams and university admissions, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam has recently released Official Dispatch 322/BGDDT-GDTrH regarding the organization of teaching for the second semester and review for the 2017 National High School Exam.

The Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam has issued some guidelines for teachers and students to organize revision for the National High School Examination 2017 to provide candidates with the best conditions for the upcoming very important examination:

Strictly prohibit the complete application of multiple-choice format in one-period tests and second-semester examinations in Vietnam

In organizing teaching and educational activities in the second semester of the 2016-2017 school year, the following points need to be noted:

- Educational institutions complete the 12th-grade program in accordance with the guidelines of the Time Frame Plan for the 2016-2017 school year and the instructions for adjusting the contents of general education by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam; it is prohibited to cut the program short.

- For regular assessments and second-semester examinations, there must be a reasonable combination of essay and objective multiple-choice formats, including questions and exercises at four levels of cognition: knowledge, comprehension, application, and high application (the complete application of the objective multiple-choice format is prohibited for one-period tests and second-semester examinations).

Prepare conditions for organizing the National High School Examination 2017 in Vietnam

Teachers and students study the guidance documents of the Ministry of Education and Training, including: Circular 04/2017/TT-BGDDT issued on Regulations of the National High School Examination and recognition of high school graduation; Circular 05/2017/TT-BGDDT issued on Regulations of university admissions for formal education, admissions to colleges of teacher training in formal education, and other documents to have a correct understanding of the innovations of the National High School Examination 2017; Actively prepare all conditions to organize the National High School Examination 2017 well.

Organize revision for 12th-grade students suitable for each school, each group of students in Vietnam

To improve the quality of the National High School Examination 2017, the Departments of Education and Training direct educational institutions to implement effective measures, organizing revision for 12th-grade students appropriate to each school, each group of students.

Students' revision is directed towards increasing their self-study time, helping them familiarize themselves with the illustrative question sets of the Ministry of Education and Training in 2017.

Focus revision on the 12th-grade program's knowledge in Vietnam

The revision for the National High School Examination has been emphasized many times by the Ministry of Education and Training to focus on the requirements of knowledge and skill standards of the 12th-grade high school education program. The National High School Examination 2017 questions will be within the 12th-grade program and meet the four levels of cognitive requirements for exam questions, including: knowledge, comprehension, application, and high application.

Organizing extra study sessions must ensure the voluntary participation of students in Vietnam

High schools and students, parents of students agree to arrange a reasonable revision time, ensure the health of students, effective study but not overload. Especially, ensure the voluntary participation of students and the effectiveness of the teaching content in organizing extra study sessions (if any).

Additionally, Official Dispatch 322/BGDDT-GDTrH also guides those students who have completed the high school program but have not graduated, who wish to review, then educational institutions should create conditions to organize review sessions for these candidates.
