Physical education, or P.E., is a subject with many specific characteristics. In particular, physical education teachers have to regularly teach outdoors, and their work is more disadvantaged than that of teachers of other subjects. Below are 03 special benefits specifically for physical education teachers at all levels in Vietnam.

1. Additional payment for each teaching session
According to Article 3 of Decision 51/2012/QĐ-TTg by the Prime Minister regarding training and clothing policies for physical education teachers, teachers in public educational institutions within the national education system, including general education, vocational education, and higher education, as well as specialized schools and centers for continuing education, are entitled to receive training allowances in the form of cash. These allowances are calculated at 1% of the minimum salary level (currently the basic salary) for each practical teaching session.
Therefore, for each practical teaching session, physical education teachers will receive additional training allowances according to the specific regions, as follows:
- Region 1: 44,200 VND per session;
- Region 2: 39,200 VND per session;
- Region 3: 34,300 VND per session;
- Region 4: 30,700 VND per session.
Note: The minimum regional salary level for 2021 remains the same as in 2020, as regulated in Decree 90/2019/NĐ-CP dated November 15, 2019, which stipulates the minimum regional salary for employees under labor contracts. Additionally, according to Article 5 of Decision 51/2012/QĐ-TTg, the cash training allowance is paid along with the monthly salary payment.
However, this cash training allowance does not apply to physical education teachers in educational institutions under the People's Army and the People's Police.
2. Eligibility for a reduction in teaching workload in certain cases in Vietnam
According to Article 6 of the Working Regulations for General Education Teachers issued together with Consolidated document 03/VBHN-BGDDT dated June 23, 2017, which specifies the teaching workload for physical education teachers in a week, the specific workload is as follows:
Primary school teachers: 23 periods;
- Lower secondary school teachers: 19 periods;
- Upper secondary school teachers: 17 periods;
- Teachers at boarding ethnic minority general education schools: 17 periods for lower secondary school, 15 periods for upper secondary school;
- Teachers at boarding ethnic minority general education schools: 21 periods for primary school, 17 periods for lower secondary school;
- Teachers at schools and classes for disabled students: 21 periods for primary school teachers, 17 periods for lower secondary school teachers.
However, Article 8 of Document 03/VBHN-BGDĐT dated June 23, 2017 also states that physical education teachers with additional duties will have their teaching workload reduced as follows:
- Homeroom teachers at primary school: reduced by 3 periods per week; reduced by 4 periods per week for lower secondary school and upper secondary school;
- Homeroom teachers at boarding ethnic minority general education schools for lower secondary school and upper secondary school: reduced by 4 periods per week. Homeroom teachers at specialized schools and boarding schools: reduced by 4 periods per week. Homeroom teachers at schools and classes for disabled students: reduced by 3 periods per week;
- Homeroom teachers at preparatory universities: reduced by 3 periods per week;
- Teachers in charge of subject classrooms: reduced by 3 periods per subject per week;
- Teachers with additional responsibilities in arts, physical education for the whole school, school gardens, school workshops, equipment rooms, and libraries (if these tasks do not have dedicated staff): reduced by 2-3 periods per week depending on the workload and as decided by the school principal;
- Department heads: reduced by 3 periods per week.
3. Eligibility for being granted 02 sets of sportswear per academic year in Vietnam
According to Article 4 of Decision 51/2012/QĐ-TTg, regulations on benefits regarding clothing are as follows:
- For physical education teachers, teachers specializing in physical education and sports teaching, they are provided with 02 sets of long-sleeved sportswear per year, 02 pairs of sports shoes per year, 04 pairs of sports socks per year, and 04 short-sleeved sports shirts per year.
- For teachers with additional duties (teaching subjects other than physical education and sports), they are provided with 01 set of long-sleeved sportswear per year, 01 pair of sports shoes per year, 02 pairs of sports socks per year, and 02 short-sleeved sports shirts per year.
Additionally, under Document 1384/BGDĐT–CTHSSV issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, it is also stipulated that the sportswear should be produced in Vietnam, suitable for the climate of each region. The material and type of clothing should ensure safety for sports activities and be suitable for the pedagogical environment and the climate of each region. The design should be in line with the cultural features and aesthetic requirements of each locality.
Note: Benefits regarding clothing are provided once a year at the beginning of the academic year.
