The temporary residence registration is made when a person goes to another place where he/she is permanently studying, working or living in Vietnam. So after registering for temporary residence, when is the extension of temporary residence?

Procedure for registration of temporary residence extension in Vietnam (Illustration)
1. Persons subject to temporary residence registration in Vietnam
- Place of temporary residence is understood as the place where citizens live for a certain period of time in addition to the place of permanent residence and have been registered for temporary residence in Vietnam.
- Subjects subject to temporary residence registration in Vietnam:
+ Citizens who come to live in lawful places outside the commune-level administrative units where they have registered their permanent residence for labor, study or other purposes for 30 days or more must register their temporary residence.
+ Vietnamese citizens who change their place of residence outside the registered place of temporary residence shall be responsible for making new registration of temporary residence.
+ Students, students and trainees come to stay in dormitories, housing areas of students, students and trainees; workers come to stay in the housing areas of workers.
Children, persons with disabilities and persons without refuge may be adopted and live in belief and religious establishments.Persons in need of care, nurture and assistance at social assistance establishments may apply for temporary residence through agencies or organizations directly managing such accommodation.

2. Time required to register for temporary residence extension in Vietnam
- Within 15 days before the end of the registered temporary residence period, the citizen must carry out procedures for extension of temporary residence in Vietnam.
- Dossiers and procedures for extension of temporary residence in Vietnam shall comply with the provisions of Clauses 1 and 2, Article 27 of the Law on Residence 2020.
- After appraising the dossier, the residence registration agency shall update the information on the new temporary residence duration of the applicant into the residence database and notify the applicant of the update of temporary residence registration information in Vietnam.
In case of refusal of registration, it must reply in writing and clearly state the reason.
- In particular, the temporary residence registration in Vietnam is carried out as follows:
+ Vietnamese citizens who come to live in lawful accommodation outside the commune-level administrative units where they have registered their permanent residence for labor, study or other purposes for 30 days or more must register their temporary residence.
+ The maximum duration of temporary residence in Vietnam is 02 years and can be extended many times.

3. Procedures for registration and extension of temporary residence in Vietnam
- Step 1: Filing in Vietnam
Persons who extend their temporary residence in Vietnam shall submit their residence extension dossiers to the residence registration agencies of their places of temporary residence.
Application dossiers for temporary residence extension in Vietnam include:
+ Declaration of change of residence information; for temporary residence registration persons who are minors, the declaration must clearly state the consent of their parents or guardians, except for cases where written consent has been provided.
+ Documents proving legal residence.
- Step 2: Receiving dossiers in Vietnam
When receiving the application for temporary residence extension, the residence registration agency shall check and issue a dossier receipt form to the applicant in Vietnam;
In case the dossier is incomplete, the applicant shall be instructed to supplement the dossier.
- Step 3: Settlement in Vietnam
Within 03 working days after receiving the complete and valid dossier, the residence registration agency shall appraise and update the information on the new place of temporary residence and the temporary residence duration of the applicant into the residence database and notify the applicant of the update of temporary residence registration information in Vietnam; in case of refusal of registration, it shall reply in writing, clearly stating the reason therefor.

Thus, within 15 days before the end of the temporary residence period (02 years), the registration must be extended at the competent state agency as prescribed.
