Which subjects are authorized to prescribe a combination of traditional medicine, herbal medicine, and chemical drugs?

The Ministry of Health issued Circular 44/2018/TT-BYT stipulating regulations on prescribing traditional medicine, medicinal herbs, and combining traditional medicine, medicinal herbs, with pharmaceutical drugs.

The authorized persons to prescribe the combination of traditional medicine, herbal medicine with chemical medicine are specifically stipulated in Article 6 of Circular 44/2018/TT-BYT as follows:

  1. Practitioners authorized to prescribe the combination of traditional medicine, herbal medicine, and chemical medicine:

- Traditional medicine specialists are authorized to prescribe chemical medicine within the internal medicine specialty;- General practitioners with a certificate of orientation training in traditional medicine specialty, with a minimum of 6 months of training.

  1. Persons authorized to prescribe chemical medicine alone:

- General practitioners with a certificate of orientation training in traditional medicine specialty, with a minimum of 6 months of training;- Traditional medicine specialists are authorized to prescribe within the internal medicine specialty, suitable to the patient's condition and technical level, and the list of techniques of the medical examination and treatment facility;- Traditional medicine physician assistants are authorized to prescribe and use emergency chemical medicine at medical facilities for emergency management.

  1. Traditional medicine physician assistants working in economically difficult or especially difficult areas without a doctor authorized to prescribe internal medicine chemical medicine are permitted to treat common diseases in the process of combining traditional medicine, herbal medicine with chemical medicine after receiving written approval from the Director of the Department of Health.
  2. Doctors who are not specialists in traditional medicine and general physician assistants are authorized to prescribe finished medicines and herbal medicines.
