What Standards Must the Quality of Ballast Water on Ships Meet?

On April 04, 2018, the Ministry of Transport issued Circular 15/2018/TT-BGTVT promulgating the National Technical Regulations on the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments from Ships, registration code: QCVN 99:2017/BGTVT.

Circular 15 stipulates that discharged ballast water must meet the following 5 requirements:

- Less than 10 viable organisms per cubic meter with a minimum size equal to or greater than 50 μm;- Less than 10 viable organisms per milliliter with a minimum size smaller than 50 μm and equal to or greater than 10 μm;- Toxicogenic vibrio cholerae bacteria (O-1 and O-139) less than 1 colony forming unit (cfu) per 100 ml or less than 1 cfu per 1 g (wet mass) of plankton sample;- Escherichia coli bacteria less than 250 cfu per 100 ml; and- Intestinal enterococci less than 100 cfu per 100 ml.
