What requirements must primary and lower secondary school students meet when integrating national defense and security education into their school curriculum in Vietnam? (Internet image)

On May 15, 2024, the Minister of Education and Training issued Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, providing guidelines for integrating the content of national defense and security in the education of primary schools, lower secondary schools, and multi-level general schools.

What requirements must primary and lower secondary school students meet when integrating national defense and security education into their school curriculum in Vietnam?

According to Article 5 of Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, the following requirements need to be met by students:

(1) General requirements

- Requirements for character development

Developing students' qualities such as patriotism, compassion, honesty, responsibility, and diligence; awareness of the responsibilities of citizens in building and protecting the socialist Republic of Vietnam.

- Requirements for competency development

Developing students' abilities for autonomy, self-study, communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and creative thinking through specialized competencies: basic awareness of national defense and security; applying acquired knowledge and skills to real-life situations.

(2) Specific requirements

- Primary school students

Developing awareness of love for the homeland and the country; gratitude towards those who have contributed to the revolution and the country; caring for and respecting family members; respecting teachers and being helpful to peers.

Fostering discipline, unity, moral cultivation, and a serious attitude towards studying, labor, and daily activities. Having a sense of discipline, maintaining hygiene, physical fitness, and voluntarily complying with school regulations and legal provisions.

- Lower secondary school students

Understanding the traditions of national resistance against foreign invaders throughout different historical periods; the traditions of the Vietnam People's Army, the People's Public Security, and the Self-Defense Forces; national sovereignty, maritime and island territories, and national border security; basic knowledge of the nationwide movement to protect national security.

Developing awareness of national defense and security at a basic level, students' responsibilities in protecting the country and maintaining social security, order, and safety. Instilling a sense of national pride, ethnic pride, love for the country, love for fellow citizens, and awareness of organizational discipline, unity, and voluntary compliance with legal provisions.

2. What are the methods and forms of integrating national defense and security education into the school curriculum in Vietnam?

The methods and forms of integrating national defense and security education into the school curriculum in Vietnam are as follows:

- Based on the lesson objectives, content, teaching experience, and actual conditions, teachers shall integrate national defense and security education into lessons by delivering concise, memorable, and understandable content; encourage creativity and cater to the psychological, physiological characteristics, and awareness of the students; combine illustrative images, artifacts that are suitable to the lessons; and enhance the application of information technology in teaching and practical activities.

- National defense and security education shall be integrated through teaching lessons, thematic learning, experiential activities, career guidance inside and outside the classroom, visits to historical sites, museums, traditional houses, and military units; activities such as camping, reading books, storytelling competitions, and quizzes about national defense and security shall be organized.
