What is Periodic Evaluation?

The method for periodic assessment of primary school students has been amended in Circular 22 on the promulgation of regulations for the assessment of primary school students, effective from November 06, 2016.

Periodic Review is an assessment of students' educational outcomes after a period of study and training, aimed at determining the level of completion of students' academic tasks compared to the knowledge and skill standards stipulated in the primary education curriculum, and the formation and development of students' competencies and qualities.

Methods of Periodic Review on Learning

In the middle of semester I, at the end of semester I, in the middle of semester II, and at the end of the school year, teachers base their assessments on regular evaluations and the knowledge and skill standards to evaluate students in each subject and educational activity according to the following levels:

- Excellent: performs well the learning requirements of the subject or educational activity;- Satisfactory: meets the learning requirements of the subject or educational activity;- Unsatisfactory: does not meet some of the learning requirements of the subject or educational activity.

At the end of semester I and the end of the school year, for the following subjects: Vietnamese, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography, Foreign Languages, Informatics, and Ethnic Minority Languages, there will be periodic tests.

For grades 4 and 5, there will be additional periodic tests in Vietnamese and Mathematics in the middle of semester I and the middle of semester II.

The periodic test questions align with the knowledge and skill standards and the orientation towards developing competencies, including questions and exercises designed at the following levels:

- Level 1: recognize, recall learned knowledge and skills;- Level 2: understand learned knowledge and skills, present, explain knowledge in a personal way;- Level 3: know how to apply learned knowledge and skills to solve familiar or similar problems in study and life;- Level 4: apply learned knowledge and skills to solve new problems or provide reasonable responses in study and life flexibly.

The tests are corrected, commented on, and graded by the teacher on a 10-point scale, without zero points or decimal points, and returned to the students. The periodic test scores are not used to compare one student with another. If the result of the end-of-semester I and end-of-year tests is abnormal compared to regular assessments, the teacher can propose to the school to let the student take another test to accurately assess the student's learning outcome.

Methods of Periodic Review on Competencies and Qualities

In the middle of semester I, at the end of semester I, in the middle of semester II, and at the end of the school year, the homeroom teacher bases their assessments on related manifestations of cognition, skills, and attitudes in the regular evaluation process regarding the formation and development of each student's competencies and qualities, summarized at the following levels:

- Good: meets the educational requirements well, manifests clearly and regularly;- Satisfactory: meets the educational requirements, manifests but not regularly;- Needs effort: does not fully meet the educational requirements, manifests unclearly.
