Waterway Traffic Signs in Vietnam are are divided into 03 types

This is an important content stipulated in Circular 73/2011/TT-BGTVT on National Technical Standards for Inland Waterway Signage in Vietnam issued by the Minister of Transport on December 30, 2011.

According to Circular 73/2011/TT-BGTVT, Waterway Traffic Signs in Vietnam are are divided into 03 types as follows:

- Channel markers indicating the limits and positions of the shipping channel (collectively referred to as channel guidance markers): These markers delineate the width range, indicate the exact position or direction of the shipping channel, guiding vessels to follow the channel correctly.

- Markers indicating dangerous positions or obstacles in the channel: These markers indicate to the watercraft the positions of obstacles or dangerous areas within the channel to avoid, ensuring safety for the vessels and infrastructures along the route.

- Informational and directional markers: These provide information about situations related to the shipping channel or navigational conditions, enabling vessels to promptly take preventive and responsive measures. This includes prohibition notices, restrictions, and directional information.

Specifically, the signage and colors are regulated as follows:

- The meaning and function of the signage are indicated on the signage signs.

- Channel limit markers and danger position markers on the left bank are triangular or diamond-shaped and painted green. On the right bank, they are inverted triangular or square-shaped and painted red.

- Directional markers for the left side of the channel are diamond-shaped, for the right side are square-shaped, and painted yellow.

- Central channel markers and obstacle markers placed on wide waterways, or with two channels will have circular signs. Central channel markers are painted red and white alternately vertically, obstacle markers are painted black, and markers indicating a dual-channel position are painted red and green.

- Prohibition notice markers have flat square signs, with a white background, red border, and a diagonal red line, with prohibitory symbols painted black.

- Restriction and directional markers have flat square signs, with a white background, red border, and restrictive or directional symbols painted black.

- Informational markers have flat square signs with a blue background and informational symbols painted white.

- Signs must be placed in logical positions that are clearly visible from the approaching direction of the channel.

- It is permissible to place 2 or 3 non-contradictory signs on the same post.

- Markers with geometrical structures or similar constructions as:- Two squares joined at right angles along their symmetrical axes (mango cut style) or cylinders collectively referred to as cylinders.

- Two triangles joined at right angles along their symmetrical axes (mango cut style) or cones collectively referred to as cones.

- Two circles joined at right angles along their symmetrical axes (mango cut style) or spheres collectively referred to as spheres.

More details can be found in Circular 73/2011/TT-BGTVT, which comes into effect in Vietnam from June 30, 2012.
