Waterway Signaling Divisions

Recently, the Ministry of Transport issued Circular 08/2020/TT-BGTVT National Technical Regulation on Inland Waterway Signaling of Vietnam.

According to the regulations, Inland waterway signals (hereinafter referred to as signals) are devices or works that belong to the infrastructure of inland waterways established and operated on the water surface, bridgeheads, equipment, means of transportation, or on land to guide waterway traffic participants and related organizations and individuals in navigation, position determination of the navigational channel, vessels, and ensure safe and efficient transportation.

Circular 08/2020/TT-BGTVT stipulates that Inland waterway signals are classified into 3 types (groups):

- Navigational channel markings to indicate the limits of the channel or vessel direction: These are signals that delimit the width, indicate the position, or show the direction of the navigational channel to guide vessels to sail correctly.

- Signals indicating dangerous positions: These are signals that inform the vessel operators of the positions of obstacles, dangerous locations, or areas on the channel to avoid.

- Informative and guiding signals: These are signals that inform about situations related to the channel or vessel operating conditions, enabling the operators of the vessels to promptly take preventive and corrective measures. These include prohibitory signals, restrictive signals, or instructions related to channel situations.
