Warning about Alcohol Steeped with Opium Plants

Previously, several highland districts in the Northern region saw a surge in the use of the stems, roots, leaves, and fruits of the opium poppy plant to steep alcohol. The supposed enhancement of male potency by this type of alcohol was widely rumored, attracting many buyers. As the end of the year and the Tet holiday approach, this type of alcohol is making a comeback, blending in with various other steeped liquors. Many who consume it begin to feel an addictive attraction, yet few are aware that with each passing day, they are treading deeper into the path of drug addiction.

Similar to the "effects" of narcotics, users may feel exhilarated, but prolonged use can be dangerous to health and life. Drinking alcohol containing narcotics is certainly more dangerous because its toxicity almost doubles: it causes nerve paralysis, memory loss, affects the liver and kidneys, accompanied by heart, vascular, digestive diseases, and other internal organs. More severe cases might lead to poisoning and death.

Note that if a user of opium-soaked alcohol tests positive for narcotics, they will be subject to a warning or a fine ranging from 500,000 VND to 1,000,000 VND for illegal use of narcotics as prescribed in Article 21 of the Decree 167/2013/ND-CP.

Individuals directly producing opium-soaked alcohol products may be penalized for illegal possession or transportation of narcotics with an administrative fine ranging from 1-2 million VND. Those who cultivate opium plants will be fined between 2 - 5 million VND.

Additionally, if the acts constitute criminal offenses, cultivating opium plants, and the illegal production, possession, transportation, or sale of narcotics can lead to criminal prosecution.

Therefore, in the spirit of legal compliance and for the protection of one’s life and health, everyone should be cautious and avoid buying and using these opium-soaked alcohol products.
