Vietnam: What to do when you are slandered by a virtual account on Facebook?

This is probably an issue that many people are concerned about today. With the continuous development of technology, it is very easy for individuals to use virtual accounts on Facebook to attack, defame, and slander each other. So what is the solution in this case?

According to Clause 3 Article 16 of the Cybersecurity Law 2018 of Vietnam, one of the strictly prohibited acts for users of cyberspace, including Facebook, is posting and distributing information that humiliates and slanders others, including:

- Information seriously harms another person’s dignity or honor;

- Information is fabricated to harm another person’s dignity or honor or violate lawful rights and interests of another organization or individual.

Concurrently, according to Article 36 of the Cybersecurity Law 2018, one of the responsibilities of the Ministry of Public Security is to carry out inspections; settle complaints, denunciations and take actions against violations against regulations of law on cybersecurity.

Thus, in this case, if it is discovered that an individual has used a virtual account to fabricate or slander him to insult his honor, reputation, and dignity. The person who is slandered needs to report to the police for timely handling or can send a complaint or denunciation to the police if there is evidence to prove who the person using the virtual account is attacking them.
