Recently, the Minister of National Defense of Vietnam issued Circular 158/2011/TT-BQP implementing policies related to the care of retired military officials.

In Article 5 of Circular 158/2011/TT-BQP, the policies for medical examination and treatment for retired military officials in Vietnam are stipulated as follows:
- Military hospitals, when signing contracts for health insurance-covered medical examination and treatment with local social insurance agencies, shall prioritize retired military officials to register for initial medical examination and treatment at a military hospital near their place of residence.
- Retired military officials receiving medical examination and treatment at military hospitals are entitled to the benefits of medical examination and treatment as provided by law on health insurance; they are to be allocated treatment rooms and enjoy healthcare policies similar to active-duty officials of the same rank and position. The medical cost shall be covered by the social insurance agency as per the regulations of the law on health insurance.
In addition to the above-mentioned medical examination and treatment policies, retired military officials are also organized for convalescent vacations according to the following regulations:
- Annually, the Hanoi Military Command, Ho Chi Minh City Military Command, and provincial and municipal Military Commands under the Central Government (hereinafter referred to as Provincial Military Commands) shall arrange transportation to bring and pick up officials for centralized convalescent vacations at units following designated periods.
- Provincial Military Commands are supported with fuel and funding corresponding to individual invitation quotas; they are responsible for planning and appointing officials to bring and pick up officials for centralized convalescent vacations; they shall cooperate with the Veterans Association at the same level to consult and request the support of local party committees and authorities for funding to organize transportation, meetings with the beneficiaries.
