From February 10, 2019, Circular 47/2018/TT-BLDTBXH issued by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs of Vietnam on the minimum knowledge volume and required competencies for graduates from intermediate (Level 4 of VQF) and college (Level 5 of VQF) levels in mechanical engineering sectors will come into force.

According to the regulation on the minimum knowledge volume and required competencies for graduates from intermediate and college levels in Ship engine repair issued together with Circular 47/2018/TT-BLDTBXH, the minimum knowledge required for graduates of Ship engine repair, Level 5 of in Vietnam are specified as follows:
- Describe the structure and operating principles of the diesel engine installed on ships;
- Explain the technical characteristics and compare the technical parameters of the parts and assemblies that make up the diesel engine installed on ships;
- Analyze the causes of damage, how to check, and repair common damages of the diesel engine installed on ships and related machinery;
- Analyze the use, classification, storage methods, and use of raw materials, fuels, and materials used in marine engine repair and assembly;
- Explain the regular and periodic maintenance procedures for the main and auxiliary diesel engines installed on ships;
- Analyze the methods of reading structural drawings, general layout drawings of parts, and the overall assembly of ship engines;
- Analyze the methods of using various tools and measuring and testing equipment during the repair and assembly of ship engines;
- Explain the methods of calculating labor and material quantities for repairing damages and assembling ship engines;
- Analyze the principles of selecting tools and equipment for repair and assembly work;
- Analyze organizational and management options during the repair and assembly processes;
- Explain the methods of operating diesel engines and related machinery;
- Explain common incidents and handling measures during repair and assembly work;
- Analyze the procedures for inspection, quality assessment, acceptance, and handover of projects;
- Explain labor safety and hygiene regulations, and fire and explosion prevention;
- Present knowledge about a green environment during work execution;
- Have practical knowledge of management, principles, and methods for planning, organizing, execution, supervision, and evaluation of processes within the scope of the field and occupation;
- Present basic knowledge about politics, culture, society, law, national defense and security, and physical education as stipulated.
