Vietnam: National periodic assessment will be carried out in grades 5, 9 and 11

This is the main content of the Circular No. 51/2011/TT-BGDĐT on national periodic assessment of student learning results in general education institutions, issued by the Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam on November 03, 2011.

According to the Circular No. 51/2011/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, the periodical national assessment is carried out as follows:

1. Assessed grades, content, and subjects

- National periodic assessments will be conducted in grades 5, 9 and 11.

- The assessment content includes the knowledge, skills and capacity specified in the General Education Program promulgated by the Ministry of Education and Training.

- Subjects assessed:

For grade 5, subjects assessed are Math and Vietnamese, grades 9 and 11 will be assessed in Math and Literature.A number of other subjects may be added to each assessment depending on the specific purpose of that assessment and will be communicated in the Academic Year Task Guide during the assessment cycle.

2. Assessment scale, cycle and timing

- The national periodical assessment of students' learning outcomes in general education institutions is carried out on a national scale.

- The national periodic assessment cycle is carried out every 3 to 5 years.

- The time of national periodic assessment will be specified in the Guidelines for the school year's tasks of the assessment cycle.

3. Assessment method

- Use the written test format for assessment subjects. The test questions are a combination of multiple choice and essay form. Encourage the introduction of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and knowledge application types to solve practical situations.

- Use techniques and advanced computer software to select samples, design exam questions, manage exams, mark papers, enter data, analyze and process data and manage assessment results.
