Recently, the Ministry of Transport of Vietnam issued Circular 64/2014/TT-BGTVT promulgating economic-technical norms for the management and maintenance of inland waterways.

The regulations on the management and maintenance of inland waterways in Vietnam are specified as follows:
- The regional inland waterway management agencies in Vietnam shall organize monthly inspections and acceptance of completed tasks of each route by inland waterway maintenance units, with the following work contents:
+ Inspect the channel conditions, signals, obstacles, transportation, and traffic safety on the route to develop technical plans for inland waterway maintenance management;
+ Resolve issues arising during the month of implementation and agree on the next steps within their authority;- Inspect compliance with norms and quotas and accept the routine tasks completed during the month.
- The inland waterway management agencies according to hierarchy shall organize quarterly inspections of the routes of the inland waterway maintenance units, with the following work contents:
+ Check and evaluate the performance of quarterly tasks by the inland waterway maintenance units;
+ Gather information on channel conditions, signals, obstacles, transportation, and traffic safety to approve technical plans for inland waterway management and maintenance;
+ Resolve issues arising during the quarterly implementation and agree on the next steps;
+ Organize the acceptance of regular management and maintenance tasks of the inland waterway maintenance units;
- The quarterly inspection and acceptance are combined with the monthly inspection and acceptance of the regional inland waterway management agencies.
