Circular 11/2014/TT-BGTVT regulates 08 grounds for selecting locations for pedestrian suspension bridges in Vietnam, including:

  1. Bridge's location must be suitable with the planning of village roads or existing paths for the purpose of socio-economic development, construction criteria, topographical, geological, and hydrological conditions to determine a reasonable bridge plan, considering future traffic development, with priority on safe traffic during the rainy flood season.

  2. Priority should be given to selecting bridge locations where the river or stream has straight terrain, the narrowest riverbed or streambed, and stable parallel flow along both banks.

  3. Priority should be given to selecting the bridge's centerline perpendicular to the flow.

  4. Bridges in mountainous areas must not be located upstream of waterfalls; if necessary, they should be at least 2 km away from the waterfall.

  5. Bridges should not be located near existing structures on both banks of the river such as ports, power lines, or irrigation works. If unavoidable, the Investor must coordinate with relevant agencies to relocate the less important structure.

  6. Bridge's location should be selected based on the highest historical water level, avoiding areas of significant erosion or deposition. The bridge should not be located too close to the downstream or upstream of river confluences. the highest historical water level should be obtained through actual survey investigation.

  7. The position of the foundation (abutment) should be chosen at locations without landslides and without groundwater.

  8. Pedestrian suspension bridges should not be arranged within a 1 km radius from areas with hydroelectric dams.

Details can be found at Circular 11/2014/TT-BGTVT effective from June 15, 2014.
