On August 28, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam issued Decision No. 920/QD-TTg regarding the reorganization of the Central Intersectoral Steering Committee on Food Safety.
According to Decision No. 920/QD-TTg, the Central Intersectoral Steering Committee on Food Safety (the Steering Committee) is an intersectoral coordination organization assisting the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam in researching, directing, and coordinating to resolve important and intersectoral tasks related to food safety.
The Steering Committee is tasked with researching, advising, recommending, and proposing to the Prime Minister of Vietnam solutions and directions to address important and intersectoral issues on food safety. It promptly suggests and recommends measures to the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam to handle complex developments in food safety that affect public health on a large scale.
Additionally, it assists the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam in directing and coordinating among ministries, ministerial-level agencies, Governmental agencies, and relevant organizations in resolving important and intersectoral issues related to food safety.
Members of the Steering Committee include:
- Head of the Committee: Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam Le Thanh Long.
- Standing Deputy Head: Minister of Health.
- Deputy Heads:
- Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development;
- Minister of Industry and Trade.
- Standing Member: Deputy Minister of Health in charge of food safety.
- Members:
- Deputy Ministers of the Ministries: Science and Technology, Public Security, Information and Communications, Finance; Agriculture and Rural Development; Industry and Trade;
- Leaders of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front;
- Deputy General Directors of Vietnam Television, Deputy General Directors of Voice of Vietnam;
- Vice Presidents of the Women's Union of Vietnam, Vice Presidents of the Vietnam Farmers' Union.
Ministries, agencies, and unions are responsible for appointing leaders as members of the Steering Committee and submitting their names to the Ministry of Health for consolidation and reporting to the Head of the Steering Committee.
- The Steering Committee operates based on democratic centralism, emphasizing the responsibility of the head; members work on a part-time basis.
- The Head of the Steering Committee uses the seal of the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam; the Deputy Heads and members use the seals of their respective ministries and central authorities in directing and executing assigned tasks.
- The Ministry of Health serves as the permanent agency of the Steering Committee, responsible for ensuring the operational conditions, using its structure to support the Steering Committee's work without increasing organizational and staffing numbers.
- The Steering Committee is responsible for periodically reporting according to the Operating Regulations, and on an ad-hoc basis as required by the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam.
- Annually, before December 31, the Ministry of Health reports the Steering Committee's operational status to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Office of the Government for consolidation and reporting to the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam.
The operating budget of the Steering Committee is guaranteed by the state budget, allocated in the regular operational funds of the Ministry of Health and other legitimate financial sources.
