Considering the proposal of the Director of the Department of Education and Training in Dispatch No. 471/TTr-GDDT-VP dated February 14, 2020, on the report regarding preparation for students to return to school, based on the actual situation at the local level, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has directed to extend the temporary school break for students and trainees of educational institutions and vocational education institutions in the city until the end of February 2020.

At the same time, the city's People's Committee will continue to report and recommend to the Government of Vietnam and the Ministry of Education and Training to allow students and trainees of educational institutions and vocational education institutions in Ho Chi Minh City to stay home until the end of March 2020 and adjust the academic year schedule for the 2019-2020 school year, continuing the second semester from April to July 2020 to complete the Curriculum content.

Thus, if this proposal of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City is approved by the Government of Vietnam, students and trainees of educational institutions and vocational education institutions in Ho Chi Minh City will continue to stay home until the end of March 2020 to prevent the Covid-19 epidemic.

Additionally, on February 14, 2020, during a meeting of the Steering Committee for the prevention of acute pneumonia caused by the new strain of COVID-19, Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung – Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee suggested that this occasion should be considered to divide the academic year into 4 terms, shorten the summer break, and increase the Tet holiday for students.

"I think the whole world has arranged the academic year for students into 4 terms. Through research, dividing the academic year into 4 terms/year results in the summer break being only 35 days, the Tet holiday being about 1 month, and the other 2 terms having a break of 2 weeks each. Ultimately, students still get 3 months of break" – Mr. Chung emphasized during the meeting.
