Standards, Duties, and Powers of Assistant Train Drivers

Circular 33/2018/TT-BGTVT issued by the Ministry of Transport on May 15, 2018, stipulates in detail the standards, duties, and powers of the assistant train driver.

To become an assistant train driver, the following standards must be met:

- Possess a diploma or professional certificate in operating railway vehicles suitable for the type of vehicle being managed;- Meet the health conditions as stipulated by the Minister of Health;- Complete a probationary period in accordance with labor laws for the position of assistant train driver and pass the professional competency assessment for assistant train driver conducted by the employing company.

According to Circular 33, an assistant train driver must perform the following duties:

- Assist the train driver during train operations, monitor the train's speed and observe signals to promptly inform the train driver for handling;- Stay alert during train operations to observe the conditions of bridges and tracks, and inform the train driver to follow the instructions of signs, signals, and markers along the railway;- Perform other tasks as assigned by the train driver.

And have the following powers:

- Inform the train driver to stop the train upon detecting any risks to train safety;- Have the right to practice driving the train under the guidance and supervision of the train driver.
