Specifications and Quantity of geological and mineral specimens submitted to the Geological Museum in Vietnam

Recently, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued Circular 53/2014/TT-BTNMT which stipulates the submission of geological and mineral specimens to the Geological Museum in Vietnam.

Circular 53/2014/TT-BTNMT stipulates the specifications and quantity of geological and mineral specimens submitted to the Geological Museum in Vietnam as follows:

  1. The delivered specimen must be representative and have characteristic features observable by the naked eye.

  2. Specimens in lump form must be solid. The quantity for each type of specimen shall be at least one (01) specimen. The minimum size of lump specimens must be 5x10x20 cm (except for the specimens specified in points 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9).

  3. Specimens in loose form with a size of less than one (01) cm must have a minimum mass of two (02) kg, contained in a durable plastic bag. Simple mineral specimens, selected specimens must have a minimum mass of 0.5 kg.

  4. Fossil specimens do not have a specified minimum size but must be intact or preserve the characteristic features of the fossil. The quantity is unlimited.

  5. Rock specimens in the form of simple minerals, single crystals have no specified minimum size but must ensure the integrity of the specimen. The minimum quantity is five (05) specimens for single specimens with sizes from one (01) cm to less than five (05) cm; three (03) specimens for single specimens with sizes of five (05) - ten (10) cm; one (01) specimen for single specimens with sizes over ten (10) cm (except for semi-precious stones, precious stones specified in points 6 and 7).

  6. Semi-precious stone specimens have no specified minimum size but must ensure the integrity of the specimen. The minimum quantity is three (03) specimens for specimens with sizes from one (01) cm to less than five (05) cm; two (02) specimens for specimens with sizes from five (05) cm to seven (07) cm; one (01) specimen for specimens with sizes over seven (07) cm. Specimens with sizes less than one (01) cm must have a minimum mass of fifty (50) g.

  7. Precious stone specimens have no specified minimum size but must distinguishable by the shape of the specimen. The minimum quantity is three (03) specimens for specimens with sizes less than one (01) cm; two (02) specimens for specimens with sizes over one (01) cm.

  8. Ornamental stone specimens must be processed specimens, with a minimum size of 02x30x30 cm. The quantity for each type is at least one (01) specimen.

  9. Drill core specimens, the minimum length of each specimen according to the drill core, is fifteen (15) cm.
