Service Age for Active Duty Officers under the Amended 2008 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army

The amended 2008 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army was enacted on June 3, 2008. This law has amended and supplemented several provisions of the 1999 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army. Notably, changes include the service age of officers.

To be specific, according to Clause 3, Article 1 of the amended Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 2008, the highest age limit for officers serving on active duty according to military rank is as follows:

- Lieutenant: male 46, female 46;- Major: male 48, female 48;- Lieutenant Colonel: male 51, female 51;- Senior Lieutenant Colonel: male 54, female 54;- Colonel: male 57, female 55;- General: male 60, female 55.

When the military has a need, officers who possess sufficient political, ethical qualities, are proficient in professional and technical skills, in good health, and are willing may have their active duty service extended for up to 5 years beyond the aforementioned regulations; in special cases, it may be extended further.

The highest age limit for officers holding command and management positions in units as prescribed in points a, b, c, d, dd, e, and g Clause 1, Article 11 shall be stipulated by the Minister of National Defense but must not exceed the highest age limit for officers specified in Clause 1, Article 13 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 1999.
