Specifically, for the Phu Quoc economic zone development plan: Research on adjustments and supplements to the scope, scale and nature to fully promote the potential of the coastal economic zone and the special position of Phu Quoc island; promote effective and sustainable connections with localities on the mainland; making an important contribution to the development goals and vision of Phu Quoc city in particular and Kien Giang province in general.

Phu Quoc Economic Zone was established under Decision 31/2013/QD-TTg dated May 22, 2013 of the Prime Minister. Phu Quoc Economic Zone, Kien Giang Province, is a coastal economic zone.
At the time of establishment, the boundary included the entire Phu Quoc island district with urban areas: Duong Dong town, An Thoi town, and 8 communes: Cua Can, Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Duong To, Tho Chau, and Hon Thom commune (including the entire island cluster south of An Thoi). The natural area of the Phu Quoc Economic Zone is 58,923 hectares. (Currently Phu Quoc city)
Phu Quoc economic zone is organized into a non-tariff zone and a tariff zone. The non-tariff area is the area identified with An Thoi port and Phu Quoc airport, and the tariff area is the remaining area, including the following functional areas: tourist and service areas, port areas and port logistics services, industrial parks, urban areas, residential areas, administrative areas, and other functional areas.
The scale and location of each area are determined in Decision 1197/QD-TTg of 2005 of the Prime Minister approving the general planning for construction of Phu Quoc island, Kien Giang province, until 2020 and Decision 633/QD-TTg of 2010 of the Prime Minister approving the adjustment of the General Plan of Phu Quoc Island until 2030.
On December 9, 2020, the XIV National Assembly Standing Committee passed Resolution 1109/NQ-UBTVQH14 establishing Phu Quoc city and wards of Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province. Phu Quoc city was officially established on the basis of the entire natural area and population of 179,480 people of Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province. Phu Quoc city borders Ha Tien city, Kien Luong district; Gulf of Thailand, and Cambodia. - Establishment of wards in Phu Quoc city, specifically: + Establishment of Duong Dong ward (adjacent to Cua Duong commune, Duong To commune and Gulf of Thailand) on the basis of the entire natural area and population of 60,415 people in Duong Dong town. + Established An Thoi ward (adjacent to Duong To commune and Gulf of Thailand) on the basis of importing the entire natural area and population of 4,610 people of Hon Thom commune and the entire natural area and population of 37,485 people of An Thoi town. - After establishing Phu Quoc city and the wards of Phu Quoc city: + Phu Quoc city has 09 commune-level administrative units, including 02 wards: An Thoi and Duong Dong, and 07 communes: Bai Thom, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Ham Ninh, and Tho Chau; + Kien Giang province has 15 district-level administrative units, including 12 districts and 03 cities; 144 commune-level administrative units, including 116 communes, 18 wards, and 10 towns. - Besides, establishing the People's Court and People's Procuracy of Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province, on the basis of inheriting the People's Court and People's Procuracy of Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province. |
