Requirements for the Evaluation of C1-class estimated resources in Vietnam

Recently, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued Circular 52/2014/TT-BTNMT on the classification and grading of mineral water and natural hot water resources in Vietnam.

Circular 52/2014/TT-BTNMT specifies the requirements for evaluating C1-class estimated resources in Vietnam as follows:

- Requirements for geological and hydrogeological evaluation:

- Preliminary determination of the geological structure of the aquifer containing mineral water, the hydraulic relationship between mineral water, natural hot water, water in other layers, and surface water;

- The sources forming the water are preliminarily determined based on comprehensive geological and hydrogeological documents or similar exploited or explored mines.

- Requirements for water quality evaluation:

- Water quality must be sampled and analyzed with relative accuracy and comprehensiveness for all indicators of chemical, physical, biological, and radioactive components to determine, in principle, the usability of mineral water, natural hot water according to requirements and objectives;

- The potential change in water quality during exploitation is preliminarily evaluated based on the analysis of comprehensive geological and hydrogeological conditions;

- After each test water extraction, comprehensive sampling and analysis must be performed, including: source water samples, trace samples, chemical samples, biochemical samples, physical samples, and radioactive samples to determine water quality.

- Requirements for evaluating estimated resources:

- Extrapolate twice (02) the actual flow value of the test boreholes for group I mines, taking into account the permissible water level drop value. The extrapolation limit is justified based on stable water quality throughout the calculated exploitation period;

- The actual flow rate of individual boreholes or the total flow rate of interfering borehole groups is determined through test water extraction under dynamic hydraulic, hydrochemical, gas, and temperature conditions stable for a minimum of one (01) month for group II mines and a minimum of three (03) months for group III mines;

- The actual flow rate of exploratory boreholes does not meet the conditions for classifying resources to grade B;

- The minimum flow rate of water exposure points is determined based on periodic measurements during the dry season, with water quality conditions ensuring requirements throughout the rainy season.

More details can be found in Circular 52/2014/TT-BTNMT which comes into effect in Vietnam from October 27, 2014.
