Regulations on validity and placement of road traffic signs in Vietnam

On June 01, 2020, the Ministry of Public Security submitted the Draft Law on ensuring road traffic order and safety to the National Assembly of Vietnam for consideration.

According to the Draft Law on ensuring road traffic order and safety of Vietnam, effectiveness of road signs and sign placement of road traffic signs are prescribed as follows:

1. Effectiveness of road signs

- Hazardous and warning signs and signposts are valid on the lanes of the direction of traffic;

- Prohibition signs and command signs are valid on all lanes or only on one or several lanes according to road signs;

- When used independently, road users must obey the meaning of the sign. When used in combination with signal lights, road users must obey the meanings and signals of both signs and signal lights in the order specified in Clause 2 Article 7.

2. Placement of the signboard

- Signs are placed so that they are easily seen by road users and have enough time to take precautions, change speed or change direction but must not obstruct the view and travel of road users;

- Signboards are placed vertically, the sea surface is facing the opposite direction; The sign is placed on the right hand side or above the roadway (except in special cases). In addition, depending on the case, additional signs can be placed on the left side in the direction of travel;

- In case the sign is placed on the pole (can be placed on lighting poles, power poles), the distance from the outer edge of the sign in the horizontal direction from the edge of the roadway is at least 0.5 m and the maximum is 1.7 m. In the absence of curbs, sidewalks, out of sight or other special circumstances, horizontal adjustment is allowed, but the sign edge on the side of the road must not overlap the edge of the roadway and be no more than 3.5 m from the edge of the roadway.
