Prohibition of Left Turns, Right Turns Still Allowed for U-Turn

For truck drivers, taxi drivers, or even motorcycle taxi drivers, traffic signs are like a multiplication table. However, for those who do not use them regularly, it is indeed difficult to remember and fully understand them.

How many of you are confident that you can remember and understand all types of traffic signs? Saying this does not mean that nobody can, but surely a large number of people, including myself, when participating in traffic "do not bother to look" at the signs. Or if they do, they "mistake a chicken for a duck" by confusing "No Left Turn" with "No U-Turn."

According to Vietnam Standard 41:2012/BGTVT, sign P.123a "No Left Turn" and sign P.123b "No Right Turn":

- Are placed at intersections to indicate that left or right turns (as indicated by the arrow) are prohibited. However, since November 1, 2016, these signs are not valid for prohibiting U-turns—this is a new and quite detailed provision stated in Vietnam Standard 41:2016/BGTVT issued together with Circular 06/2016/TT-BGTVT. Thus, we can agree that: When encountering the signs "NO LEFT TURN" or "NO RIGHT TURN"****, U-TURNS are still allowed.- The sign is effective in prohibiting all types of vehicles (both motorized and non-motorized) from turning left or right except for vehicles that are given priority according to regulations.- Before installing a no-turn sign, it is necessary to place a sign indicating the appropriate direction.

For no U-turn signs, they include: Sign P.124 (a, b) "No U-Turn", sign P.124c "No Left Turn and No U-Turn", sign P.124d "No Right Turn and No U-Turn", sign P.124e "No Left Turn for Cars and No U-Turn", and sign P.124f "No Right Turn for Cars and No U-Turn".

- When encountering sign P.124a "No U-Turn," all types of vehicles (both motorized and non-motorized) are not allowed to make a U-turn. The direction of the arrow corresponds to the prohibited U-turn direction.- When encountering sign P.124b, cars and three-wheeled motorcycles are not allowed to make a U-turn. The direction of the arrow corresponds to the prohibited U-turn direction for cars. This sign does not prohibit left turns to other directions.- When encountering sign P.124c, vehicles are not allowed to turn left and are also prohibited from making a U-turn.- When encountering sign P.124d, vehicles are not allowed to turn right and are also prohibited from making a U-turn.- When encountering sign P.124e, cars are not allowed to turn left and are also prohibited from making a U-turn.- When encountering sign P.124f, cars are not allowed to turn right and are also prohibited from making a U-turn.

Thus, traffic signs do not always simultaneously prohibit vehicles from turning left, right, and making a U-turn at the same time. For signs P.123a and P.124b, they do not prohibit U-turns.
