The Ministry of Education and Training issued Official Dispatch 5335/BGDDT-GDTH dated October 12, 2022 guiding the organization of teaching multigrade classes at primary school level.

1. What is a multigrade class?

According to Official Dispatch 5335/BGDDT-GDTH, a multi-grade class is a class where students in two or more different level groups (grades) study together and are directly taught by the same teacher at the same time to achieve the educational goals of each level group.

2. Requirements for elementary and multigrade classes in Vietnam

- Ensure that students can study compulsory subjects and educational activities and have 2 study sessions/day according to the regulations of the general education program at the elementary level.

- Each multigrade class has no more than 15 students and no more than two levels. In special cases, a multi-level class can combine three levels but must not exceed 10 students. A two-level multigrade class or a three-level multigrade class are counted as one multigrade unit. Priority is given to organizing multi-level classes with adjacent levels and combining classes with disjointed levels.

- Each multigrade class needs to have enough space and be equipped with teaching aids and equipment according to regulations, suitable to the specific conditions of each multigrade class, each level group, and specific characteristics.

3. Teaching plan for elementary and multigrade classes in Vietnam

Implementing Official Dispatch 2345/BGDĐT-GDTH dated June 7, 2021, educational institutions develop multigrade teaching plans to organize 2 sessions/day.

Multi-grade teaching plans are built for the entire school year, each semester, each month, and each week appropriate to the levels, while ensuring flexibility in organizational forms suitable for students so that by the end of the school year, all students can achieve the educational goals of each respective level.

The content, level, and duration of educational activities for multigrade classes are implemented flexibly based on the specific conditions and characteristics of the multigrade class on the basis of ensuring the organization of teaching subjects and compulsory educational activities according to the regulations of the program.

When developing a multigrade teaching plan, it is necessary to focus on implementing the following contents:

- For Vietnamese and Math subjects: carry out correct and complete teaching of subject curriculum content as prescribed for each level group, with special attention paid to activities to consolidate and strengthen Vietnamese for students at grade 1 and grade 2 levels.

- For compulsory subjects and educational activities other than Vietnamese, Mathematics, when developing subject teaching plans and educational activities, it is necessary to organize teachers to research and review the content of the subject program (content lines, requirements to be met, etc.) and textbooks. to determine the focus content and design teaching topics in the direction of disciplinary integration (designing teaching topics in the same subject) or interdisciplinary (building teaching topics with similar content of subjects) ensuring the requirements of subjects and educational activities according to regulations for different level groups.

When designing integrated teaching topics, it is necessary to select the content of the subject program and educational activities of the lower level group as the basis; the content of the subject program and educational activities of the higher level group are considered an extension; It is also necessary to determine the requirements to be met according to the regulations of the curriculum of subjects, educational activities, and requirements for quality and capacity according to each corresponding level to ensure quality teaching organization according to regulations.

4. Evaluation method for students in elementary multigrade classes in Vietnam

Conduct evaluations of multigrade students according to current regulations, including:

For Vietnamese and Math subjects: evaluate the learning process, progress, and learning results of students to fully meet the requirements of Vietnamese and Math subjects according to the general education program at the elementary level.

For subjects and educational activities other than Vietnamese and Math: Evaluate the learning process and progress of students to meet the requirements of subjects, educational activities, and the formation and development of students' qualities and abilities. When performing an assessment, the following contents must be ensured:

- Based on the Teaching Plan (requirements to be met for each subject, educational activity, and requirements for quality and capacity according to each corresponding level), lesson plans, and educational goals for each level, and based on regular comments and assessments throughout the learning process.

- Focus on evaluation with comments through mainly observation methods; question and answer method; and evaluation methods through students' learning records, products, and activities.

- During the evaluation process with comments, it is necessary to attach importance to encouraging students' progress and arousing interest in learning so that all students can learn, be evaluated, and be accurately and objectively confirmed to complete the class program according to their respective level.
