Nurses shall assess patient condition on scales in Vietnam

On August 20, 2012, the Ministry of Health of Vietnam issued Circular 13/2012/TT-BYT providing guidance on anesthesia and resuscitation practices.

According to Article 12 of Circular 13/2012/TT-BYT, the duties and authority of anesthesia - resuscitation nurses are in line with the provisions of Circular 07/2011/TT-BYT dated January 26, 2011, by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam guiding nursing work in patient care at hospitals; Decision 41/2005/QD-BNV dated April 22, 2005, by the Ministry of Home Affairs on promulgating professional standards for healthcare public employees, nurses; Circular 23/2009/TT-BYT dated December 1, 2009, by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam on promulgating professional standards for the categories of medical technical public employees. Moreover, anesthesia - resuscitation nurses have several specific duties and authorities, especially in recovery units. To be specific:

- Monitor the patient, detect, and initially handle complications of the patient within the allowed scope, prepare fully equipped beds, medical equipment, and consumables to be ready to receive the patient after surgery;

- Assist anesthesia - resuscitation doctors in examining and treating patients in recovery units;

- Evaluate the patient's condition according to the prescribed scales;

- Fully, accurately, and truthfully monitor and record the patient's progress, and the implementation of medical orders in the monitoring chart and nursing records.

Additionally, Circular 13/2012/TT-BYT also stipulates the specific duties of nurses in surgical resuscitation units in Vietnam as follows:

- Admit, monitor the patient, detect, and initially handle complications of the patient within the allowed scope, prepare fully equipped beds, medical equipment, and consumables to be ready to receive the patient after surgery;

- Fully, accurately, and truthfully monitor and record the patient's progress, and the implementation of medical orders in the monitoring chart and nursing records;

- Immediately report to the doctor and head nurse when the patient shows abnormal developments or faces difficulties in fulfilling medical orders and patient care;

- Prepare and provide nutrition for the patient as per the doctor’s orders and adhere to the established nursing care plan.
