November 20: Teachers Are Granted Leave to Attend Vietnam Teachers' Day

On September 28, 1982, the Council of Ministers issued a document decreeing November 20 each year as the Vietnam Teachers' Day. This day is celebrated as a festival for the education sector and a day to "Honor Teachers and Respect the Teaching Profession", aimed at recognizing and honoring individuals working in the field of education.

Vietnam Teachers' Day is uniformly organized nationwide on November 20 each year in all schools at various levels, including preschool education, adult education, general education, and teacher training...

According to Article 4 of Decision 167-HDBT, it is stipulated: "On November 20, schools can rearrange learning and teaching activities so that teachers can take a break and participate in school and local activities."

Furthermore, Article 3 of Circular 26-TT-1982 also clearly states: "Each school should have a variety of light and meaningful activities such as introducing teacher traditions; recounting the most profound memories in the teaching profession; reading letters from students sent to the school; inviting students with significant achievements in production, study, work, and combat to speak at the school; holding seminars on the honor and responsibility of teachers; educating the love for the profession and for students in teacher training schools; organizing cultural, artistic and sports activities..."

Simultaneously, schools need to review achievements and launch new competitions to meet the objectives set out in the first semester. According to Decision 167, various levels and sectors are required to assign leaders to visit teachers, organize friendly meetings with teachers, and may also organize awards for teachers who have made significant achievements on this occasion.

However, according to Decree 111/2018/ND-CP, which stipulates that round years, being those with the last digit "0," shall be commemorated at Ministry, sector, and provincial levels, and this year marks the 37th anniversary of Vietnam Teachers' Day (November 20, 1982 – November 20, 2019). Therefore, in 2019, Vietnam Teachers' Day will not have major commemoration ceremonies at the Ministry, sector, and provincial levels; instead, activities will focus on propaganda, education, competition, seminars, and other meaningful activities to celebrate Vietnam Teachers' Day.

"Teachers have dedicated themselves and taught students for a year, and thus, there is only one November 20 each year to honor these great contributions. Therefore, the school should arrange the teaching schedule per the objectives of Decision 167, allowing teachers to enjoy the full joy on Vietnam Teachers' Day." - Opinion of Lawyer Bui Tuong Vu, Chairman of HDTV THU KY LUAT.
