Necessary knowledge for the drainage and wastewater treatment industry at intermediate level in Vietnam

On December 28, 2018, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs issued Circular 56/2018/TT-BLDTBXH stipulating the minimum knowledge volume and competency requirements that learners must achieve upon graduation from intermediate, college levels in transport services, environment, and security sectors in Vietnam.

Circular 56/2018/TT-BLDTBXH stipulates that the water drainage and wastewater treatment technology at the intermediate level is a field in Vietnam that performs the following tasks: Operating the drainage network; maintaining and servicing the drainage network; operating, maintaining, and servicing drainage pump stations; operating wastewater treatment plants; maintaining and servicing wastewater treatment plants; monitoring the quality of wastewater during treatment, meeting the Level 4 requirements in the National Qualifications Framework of Vietnam. The students in Vietnam need to have the following knowledge:

- Describe the safety measures during the operation, maintenance, and servicing of the drainage network and wastewater treatment plants;

- Describe the properties and components of different types of wastewater;

- Describe the functions, duties, and common malfunctions of the facilities in the drainage network and in wastewater treatment plants;

- Describe the frequent damages occurring in the drainage network and wastewater treatment plants;

- Describe the potential hazards during the operation, maintenance, and servicing of the drainage network and wastewater treatment plants;

- Describe the maintenance and servicing procedures for sewer pipes, manholes, connections, and pump stations;

- Describe the basic treatment levels in domestic wastewater treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment plants;

- Describe the decomposition processes of pollutants in each facility and their removal methods;

- Describe the structure, functions, and operating principles of basic wastewater treatment facilities and equipment by mechanical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological methods, including disinfection and deodorization facilities;

- Describe the process of operating the facilities in the treatment plant;

- Describe the process of operating the sludge, gas, and waste treatment systems generated;

- Describe the sampling, transportation, storage, and preservation methods for wastewater and sludge samples;

- Describe the basic knowledge about politics, culture, society, law, national defense and security, and physical education as stipulated.

Note: The minimum knowledge volume is 1,500 hours (equivalent to 59 credits).
