Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam issued Circular 24/2014/TT-BGDDT promulgating the Khmer language program for primary and lower secondary levels, in which specific regulations on teaching methods were outlined.
Methods of Teaching Khmer Language in Primary and Secondary Education in Vietnam (illustrative image)
The methods of teaching Khmer language at the primary and lower secondary levels in Vietnam are prescribed as follows:
- Teaching Khmer language at the primary and lower secondary levels focuses on teaching communication skills with a student-centered approach. Students actively participate in learning activities guided by teachers, interacting with learning materials and the Khmer language-speaking environment of the community. Teachers utilize a variety of flexible teaching methods, such as language practice, pattern drills, role-playing, situational handling, and more.
- Communication activities should be organized in a variety of diverse forms suitable for the practical context of the Khmer language-speaking environment in Vietnam. Practice of communication should be combined with interactive activities (discussions, games, songs, role-playing, storytelling, puzzles, drawing, etc.) organized in individual, pair, and group formats to enhance student participation. Emphasis is placed on extracurricular activities within the community.
- Teachers are encouraged to actively innovate teaching methods and effectively use teaching aids and equipment. Teachers should actively create teaching tools from locally available materials to improve the quality of their lessons.
More details can be found in Circular 24/2014/TT-BGDDT, which is effective from January 1, 2015.
