Measures to Prevent the Spread of Fire in Building Design

Fire Safety for Rooms, Buildings, and Construction WorksFire safety for rooms, buildings, and construction works (hereinafter collectively referred to as buildings) is mandatory for all stages of new construction, renovation, repair, or functional change. This also sets forth the technical classification for fire resistance for buildings, parts and components of buildings, rooms, construction elements, and building materials.

According to Circular 01/2020/TT-BXD, measures to prevent the spread of fire should be carried out to limit the fire's area, intensity, and duration. Specifically, they are:

- Use structural and layout solutions – spatial arrangement to prevent the spread of dangerous fire factors within a room, between rooms, between groups of rooms with different fire hazards according to their functions, between floors and units, between fire compartments, as well as between buildings.

- Limit the fire hazard and explosion hazard of technology within rooms and buildings.

- Limit the fire hazard of building materials used on the surface layers of building structures, including: roof coverings, facade finishes, rooms, and escape routes.

- Have initial firefighting equipment, including automatic and handheld devices.

- Have fire detection and alarm devices.

Note: Regulations on fire prevention distance between residential, public buildings, and production houses are provided in Appendix E. The distance between flammable liquid warehouses, open-air warehouses containing flammable materials, LPG1) tanks, gas-containing tanks to other buildings must comply with specialized industry standards.

In addition, the standard also specifies that rooms, including those with type 2 staircases, must be separated from the corridors connecting them and other rooms by type 1 fire partitions. It is permitted not to separate rooms with type 2 staircases by fire partitions when: There is automatic firefighting equipment installed throughout the building; or in buildings not exceeding 9 m in height with a single floor area not exceeding 300 m².

Details can be found at Circular 01/2020/TT-BXD, effective from July 1, 2020.
