Maximum Penalty for Turning Right at a Red Light

In reality, there are many instances where drivers have the habit of turning right at a red light because they believe that a red light indicates a prohibition to go straight ahead, and since the right turn is convenient, they proceed to turn. However, this is a mistaken understanding and can lead to being sanctioned.

According to regulations, when the traffic light turns red, all vehicles must stop (except in priority cases) and are only allowed to turn right if the following signals are present:

- Command from the traffic controller;- Traffic signal command;- Road sign command;- Road markings and other signs on the road surface.

Auxiliary arrow traffic light

When the traffic light post has an auxiliary arrow with a green (red) arrow or a motorcycle icon, the driver is allowed to turn right in the direction of the arrow; if the arrow turns red, the vehicle must stop.

Accompanying road guide signs

Motor vehicles will be permitted to turn right at a red light if there is a traffic sign allowing right turns. At this point, vehicles must turn on their turn signal and yield to pedestrians.

Road markings and other signs on the road surface

In cases where there are road markings indicating a right turn, drivers are permitted to turn right when the light is red following the directions of the road markings and must signal when turning.

Thus, when the traffic light turns red and the driver turns right without the above signals, a fine of VND 1,200,000 - 2,000,000 will be imposed for cars and VND 300,000 - 400,000 for motorcycles, according to Point a Clause 5 Article 5 and Point c Clause 4 Article 6 of Decree 46/2016/ND-CP.
