Limits of Permissible Errors for Gold Content Determination Test Results

This is the prominent content stipulated in Circular 22/2013/TT-BKHCN issued by the Minister of Science and Technology regulating the measurement management in the gold trade and the quality management of gold jewelry and fine art gold circulating in the market.

In accordance with Circular 22/2013/TT-BKHCN, for the testing activities to determine the gold content in jewelry and fine art gold products circulated on the market, the permissible error margin for the results of the gold content determination testing as stipulated by the Ministry of Science and Technology is as follows:

- 1‰ for gold with a content of 99.9% or higher;- 2‰ for gold alloy with a content from 80% to below 99.9%;- 3‰ for gold alloy with a content below 80%.

Additionally, the organization designated for determining the gold content as per Article 9 of Circular 22/2013/TT-BKHCN must adhere to the following measurement requirements:

- The device used for determining the gold content must meet the following criteria:

- Have a measurement range appropriate for the gold content to be measured;- Have an error margin no greater than 1/2 of the permissible error margin for the gold content determination results;- Be calibrated periodically once (01) per year at an organization registered to provide calibration services in accordance with the Law on Measurement; the calibration certificate must be valid.

- The gold content standard used for the periodic inspection and calibration of the gold content determination device must meet the following criteria:

- Have a gold content value appropriate for the measurement range of the gold content determination device to be inspected and calibrated;- Measurement uncertainty of the gold content value must not exceed 7/10 of the permissible error margin of the gold content determination device to be inspected and calibrated;- Have been tested or compared at an organization providing measurement standard testing services in accordance with the Law on Measurement or at a foreign national measurement certification agency or at a laboratory linked to a foreign national measurement certification agency. The test or comparison results certificate (Certificate of analysis) must be valid.
