Khmer Language Program for Primary and Lower Secondary Education on the Second Year in Vietnam

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam issued Circular 24/2014/TT-BGDDT on the Khmer language program for primary and lower secondary education levels, which stipulates the content of the Khmer language program for the second year of primary and lower secondary education levels in Vietnam.

The Khmer language program for primary and lower secondary schools in the second year in Vietnam will include the following content: 

Knowledge:

1. Phonetics, Writing

- Main and sub-parts of consonants according to two accent systems O and Ô;

- Rules for combining parts, syllables and stress change rules;

- Independent vowels;

- Multisyllabic words; tone marks;

- Natural numbers in the tens from 10-100.

2. Vocabulary, Grammar

- Expanding vocabulary (including idioms, proverbs) regarding self, family, school, nature, country, and ethnic culture;

- A number of simple narrative and interrogative sentences according to models.

Skills:

1. Listening

- Hear and recognize sounds, words with accents O, Ô;

- Understand questions, requests, instructions, and dialogues;

- Comprehend and remember simple stories told by teachers.

2. Speaking

- Express invitations, requests, suggestions, agreements, disagreements, etc., and respond to conversational questions;

- Answer simple questions about the content of the reading or story heard from teachers;

- Recount simple events based on questions and illustrative images;

- Retell a simple story learned or heard from teachers.

3. Reading

- Read characters, tone marks, and independent vowels;

- Read words, sentences, sequences of sentences, and short paragraphs containing learned sounds and characters;

- Read silently;

- Recognize and read natural numbers in the tens from 10-100;

- Understand words, sentences, paragraphs; recognize the main idea of paragraphs. Find information and organize it in sentences, paragraphs;

- Memorize and recite some learned stanzas.

4. Writing

- Write consonants, syllables, words, short sentences, and natural numbers in the tens from 10-100;

- Write from dictation sequences of sentences or paragraphs;

- Write responses to questions, describe the content of pictures;

- Write sequences of sentences or paragraphs approximately 2-3 sentences narrating events.
