Issuance of Retention Periods for 10 Categories of Medical Professional Documents

On December 29, 2017, the Ministry of Health issued Circular 53/2017/TT-BYT stipulating the retention periods for professional and technical records and documents in the health sector.

Circular 53 has issued the Retention Schedule for records and specialized professional documents for the healthcare sector for the following 10 groups of documents:

- Group 01: Documents on medical examination, treatment, and rehabilitation.- Group 02: Documents on pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.- Group 03: Documents on medical equipment.- Group 04: Documents on traditional medicine and pharmacy.- Group 05: Documents on preventive medicine.- Group 06: Documents on healthcare environment.- Group 07: Documents on food safety.- Group 08: Documents on population.- Group 09: Documents on maternal and child health.- Group 10: Documents on health insurance.

Additionally, Circular 53 also provides guidance on the application of the Retention Schedule for records and documents, specifically:

- The Retention Schedule for specialized professional records and documents in the healthcare sector serves as the basis for establishing the list of records and documents of the units and determining the retention period for records and documents.- For records and documents that have expired the retention period, the Document Valuation Council of the agency or unit shall review, evaluate, and dispose of them in accordance with the laws on archiving or extend the retention period if necessary.
