The Ministry of Health recently issued Circular 40/2018/TT-BYT regulating the management of infectious disease specimens.
According to Circular 40, when there is a spillage of specimen samples during transportation, the handling procedures are as follows:
- Follow the spill response procedure prescribed in Appendix VI issued together with Circular 40.- The transporter of the specimen sample should contact the receiving unit, the sending unit, or the nearest healthcare facility for guidance on handling measures.- In the case of direct exposure to infectious materials, the exposed area must be washed with soap and water or with a disinfectant; the exposed person should be immediately taken to the nearest healthcare facility for consultation and treatment.- After performing the aforementioned handling measures, the executor must report the incident to the sample-sending unit. For Category A infectious substances, the incident must also be immediately reported to the Department of Health in the area where the incident occurred.
