How to Change the Color of a Motorcycle in Compliance with the Law

Arbitrarily changing the color of a vehicle may no longer be an unfamiliar matter. However, not everyone knows how to legally change the color of their vehicle.

Everyone desires to own a beautiful vehicle that turns heads when they are out on the road. However, for some individuals, beauty alone is not enough; the vehicle also needs to be unique. Consequently, they adorn their vehicles with vibrant colors. Sometimes, these modifications can be considered "excessive" or "eye-straining."

This Honda SH 2010 in its original blue color is owned by a biker from Long Xuyen, An Giang.

However, the act of unilaterally changing the color of the vehicle’s paint, which differs from that registered in the Vehicle Registration Certificate, will result in a fine. Individuals who are owners of motorcycles, scooters, and similar types of vehicles will incur a fine ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 VND. Organizations owning such vehicles will face a fine ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 VND (based on Point a Clause 1 Article 30 Decree 171/2013/ND-CP).

According to current regulations, the law does not prohibit changing the vehicle’s paint color but requires compliance with necessary procedures to be issued a new Vehicle Registration Certificate. According to Clauses 3 and 4, Article 14 of Circular 15/2014/TT-BCA, the process includes 5 steps:

- Visit the vehicle registration acceptance location to fill out the vehicle registration form;- Present Identification Card and Vehicle Registration;- Submit the dossier and explain the reason for changing the vehicle’s paint color;- Pay the fee;- Receive the appointment slip and subsequently collect the new Vehicle Registration Certificate.
