Highest Military Rank for Officer Positions

Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army amended in 2008 was promulgated on June 3, 2008. This law has amended and supplemented several provisions of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 1999.

To be specific, according to Clause 4, Article 1 of the amended 2008 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army, which amends and supplements Article 15 of the 1999 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army, the highest military ranks for officer positions are stipulated as follows:

- The highest military rank for basic officer positions:

- Platoon Leader: Senior Lieutenant;- Company Commander, Company Commissar: Captain;- Battalion Commander, Battalion Commissar: Lieutenant Colonel;- Regiment Commander, Regiment Commissar; Chief of the District Military Command, District Military Command Commissar: Colonel;- Brigade Commander, Brigade Commissar: Colonel;- Division Commander, Division Commissar; Naval Region Commander, Naval Region Commissar; Coast Guard Region Commander, Coast Guard Region Commissar; Chief of the Provincial Military Command, Provincial Military Command Commissar; Chief of the Provincial Border Guard Command, Provincial Border Guard Command Commissar: Colonel;- Army Corps Commander, Army Corps Commissar; Branch Commander, Branch Commissar: Major General;- Military Region Commander, Military Region Commissar; Service Commander, Service Commissar; Border Guard Commander, Border Guard Commissar: Lieutenant General;- Chairman of the General Department, General Department Commissar: Lieutenant General;- Chief of the General Staff, Head of the General Political Department: General;- Minister of National Defense: General.

- The highest military rank for positions equivalent to the positions specified in Points g, h, and i, Clause 1, Article 15 of the 1999 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army is defined by the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam; and for positions specified in Points a, b, c, d, dd, and e by the Minister of National Defense.

- Officers serving in local military forces at the provincial or district level in key military, defense areas as stipulated by the Government of Vietnam, or officers in units with special duties as stipulated by the Minister of National Defense and with outstanding performance, may be promoted to one rank higher than the highest rank stipulated in Clause 1, Article 15 of the 1999 Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army.
