What is the social insurance code in Vietnam?

The social insurance code is a natural number sequence consisting of 10 digits. Specifically, the first 2 digits are the province code, and the following 8 digits are natural numbers corresponding to the social insurance book number and the last 10 digits of the health insurance card.

Previously, Vietnam Social Security also issued Official Dispatch 3340/BHXH-ST adjusting the new format and code for social insurance books and health insurance cards. Accordingly:

- Replace the phrase "Book number:" printed on the cover and separate sheets of the social insurance book with the phrase "Code number:"

Example: The cover and separate sheets of the social insurance book previously printed "Book number: 0118000001", are now printed as "Code number: 0118000001”

- Replace the word "Number:" printed on the health insurance card with the phrase "Code number:"

Example: The card previously printed "Number:

is now printed as "Code number:

Additionally: The expiration date of the health insurance card: only print "Validity: from day.../.../....".

Benefits of the social insurance code

- When engaging in transactions regarding social insurance and health insurance, participants only need to provide their social insurance code to enjoy the benefits of social insurance and health insurance, and participants can also check the information about their participation, contributions, and enjoyment of the benefits.

- When participants undergo medical examinations with health insurance, medical facilities can look up the health insurance card data of the patients in the information reception portal of the health insurance assessment system and determine whether the health insurance card is still valid.

- For employers, through the social insurance code of each employee in the unit, employers can reduce the time needed for declaring and updating social insurance and health insurance information for employees, thereby resolving social insurance and health insurance benefits more quickly;

- For the social insurance agency, the social insurance code updated in the data system allows the agency to tightly manage the process of contributions and benefits of social insurance and health insurance for each individual, and easily control whether there is any evasion of social insurance and health insurance contributions by employers. It is also possible to reissue social insurance books and health insurance cards at any social insurance agency nationwide, greatly simplifying administrative procedures.
