Hanoi-Vietnam: Hazard fire and explosion indices for some common types of gas

This is a noteworthy content mentioned in Circular 52/2019/TT-BCA issued by the Vietnam Minister of Public Security regarding the National Technical Regulation on “Fire fighting and prevention apparatus and equipment for storage, delivery port and distribution stations of gas”.

Any agencies, organizations, and individuals involved in the activities of constructing, upgrading, expanding, and managing the operations of storage, delivery port and distribution stations of gas within the territory of Vietnam must comply with the hazard fire and explosion indices for some common types of gas as shown in Table 1 of the National Technical Regulation on "Fire fighting and prevention apparatus and equipment for storage, delivery port and distribution stations of gas - QCVN 01: 2019/BCA” issued together with Circular 52/2019/TT-BCA as follows:

Table 1. Hazard fire and explosion indices for some common types of gas

No. Gas Chemical formula Gas properties Density relative to air Flashpoint (°C) Auto-ignition temperature (°C) Lower flammability limit
(% by volume)
Upper flammability limit
(% by volume)
1 Butane C4H10 Flammable gas 2.0665 -69 405 1.8 9.1
2 Propane C3H8 Flammable gas 1.5 -96 470 2.3 9.4
3 Methane CH4 Flammable gas 0.5517 - 537 5.28 14.1

Additionally, this regulation stipulates that based on capacity and maximum operating pressure, gas distribution stations are classified into three levels as follows:

- Class I stations: Have a pressure equal to or greater than 60 bar and a flow rate equal to or greater than 20 million M3/day and night;

- Class II stations: Have a pressure from 20 bar to 60 bar and a flow rate from 10 million to 20 million M3/day and night;

- Class III stations: Have a pressure of less than 20 bar and a flow rate of less than 10 million M3/day and night.

Note: Gas distribution stations with a pressure from 20 bar to 60 bar and a flow rate greater than 20 million M3/day and night are considered Class I stations; Gas distribution stations with a pressure less than 20 bar and a flow rate from 10 million to 20 million M3/day and night are considered Class II stations.

More details can be found in Circular 52/2019/TT-BCA which took effect from December 18, 2019.
