The following article contains information about the collection of data related to water sources that require the establishment of a water source protection corridor in Vietnam from January 10, 2025, as specified in Circular 23/2024/TT-BTNMT.

On November 26, 2024, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam issued Circular 23/2024/TT-BTNMT, stipulating the techniques for setting up a water source protection corridor.
According to the regulations in Article 4 of Circular 23/2024/TT-BTNMT, the collection, review of data, and information related to water sources required to establish a protection corridor for water sources in Vietnam are to be conducted as follows:
- Study of the objectives, tasks, scope, subjects, duration, content volume, and methods applied in implementing the water source protection corridor according to the approved outline.
- Collect and compile relevant documents related to the investigation area including:
+ Documents on socio-economic conditions, provincial and municipal planning, status, land use planning, programs, and plans for developing economic sectors affecting water resources;
+ Features of topography, geology, hydrology, environment, evolution of riverbeds, banks, streams, canals, and ditches;
+ Current status of investigating, evaluating surface water resources and the current state of surface water exploitation and use in the investigated area;
+ Morphological characteristics of rivers, streams, canals, ditches, including name, length, position of start and end points, administrative boundaries;
+ List of lakes, ponds, lagoons not to be filled in; hydropower and irrigation reservoirs and other reservoirs on rivers and streams;
+ Erosion status of river, stream, canal, ditch sections, and lakes, ponds, lagoons in the list of lakes, ponds, lagoons not to be filled in;
+ Drainage axes for urban areas, concentrated residential areas, industrial zones, clusters;
+ Current status of waste discharge and wastewater into water sources, surface water quality, and assessment reports on pollution, degradation, depletion of water sources;
+ Nature reserves, religious activities, beliefs, cultural values, biodiversity, tourism development, ecosystems related to water sources;
+ Livelihoods of riverbank communities; land use status, economic, cultural, social activities in riverine areas;
+ Documents on surface water extraction licensing status and environmental licensing;
+ Collect maps of current land use and cadastral maps;
+ Documents on operational status of inland waterway transport and protection corridor boundaries for inland waterway infrastructure, information on coastal protection corridor boundaries established (if any) for coastal water sources (lagoons, bays, ponds, lakes, and related objects) requiring establishment of a water resource protection corridor;
+ Other related documents.
- Review, compile, and assess the completeness and reliability of the collected documents.
- Compile and list the collected information, data, and documents:
+ Compile a list of reliable information and data to serve the investigation and listing of water sources requiring a protection corridor;
+ Identify missing information, data, and documents that need further investigation and survey;
+ Prepare a report on the results of information and data collection and review, and hand over the products.
The procedures for establishing boundary markers for the water source protection corridor in Vietnam are carried out in accordance with the provisions in Article 15 of Circular 23/2024/TT-BTNMT as follows:
- Preparation work for establishing boundary markers.
- Construction of boundary markers for the water source protection corridor.
- Prepare product dossiers for inspection, acceptance, and handover of boundary markers.
